Janco Community Farms (JCF) is an Urban Farm Initiative serving in and around the Charlotte metro area. Our mission is to increase access to locally grown food for healthy and nutritious consumption.

Our primary goals are to assist in closing food inequality gaps, eradicate food deserts, invest in disinvested communities, and share knowledge with the community on food growing and sustainability practices.

JCF strives to acknowledge and preserve Black Farm culture by providing clean, healthy foods through chemical-free, sustainable practices. JCF’s Small scale farming practices contributes to an overall healthier food system and thereby strengthens the communities we serve.

By purchasing and renting land deemed “unusable” in urban areas JCF is able to grow food right in the communities we live in and serve. This strategy allows us to reach communities that are largely affected by food insecurities and are situated within food deserts. With our mobile Farmers Market Food Truck we are able to take our fresh meat, produce and products right to the communities doorsteps.

Christina Benton, owner and Chief farmer, comes from a family of ‘backyard farmers’ and has been growing food and raising chickens for her family and immediate community for many years. She learned many of her farming skills through trial and error and through many hours of research, classes, and being mentored. After serving many years as a college professor and a forensic death investigator, Christina became burned out. She then turned her love for growing food and her drive to be an advocate for food justice, into an entrepreneurial endeavor and Janco Community Farms was born.

Cameron Tate, farm manager, has spent his career working with his hands in imaginative and creative ways, from construction and manufacturing to transportation. Recently, he spent time learning how to grow fresh produce without the use of chemicals or non-natural products. He’s spent many years assisting with his family’s garden and is eagerly applying those skills to his role as farm manager at Janco Community Farms.
